Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day will be marked Saturday, Sept. 30 across Canada.  This day grew out of “Phyllis' story” of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of residential school. The orange shirt symbolizes all that was lost and the resilient spirit that remains. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools. This non-gathered event requires nothing more than to wear any orange shirt that you have on Sept. 30 and look for opportunities to explain to people why. For more information, please call: Myron Rogal, Coordinator of the Office of Justice and Peace, (306) 659-5841 or e-mail: justpeace [at] saskatoonrcdiocese.com

Marie-Louise Ternier First session: Wednesday September 20 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 323 4th Ave S, Saskatoon.Sessions 2 - 5: Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on September 23, September 30, October 14, and October 21 at Queen’s House Retreat & Renewal Centre, 601 Taylor Street West, Saskatoon, SK. COST: $25 per session or $100/series. Add lunch on Saturdays for $12 each day.2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. This anniversary offers the Christian family a special opportunity to look back and reflect on the last five hundred years of history in thanksgiving and in confession – recognising our errors, seeking mutual forgiveness, and rejoicing in those efforts we have made toward mutual understanding and respect. This anniversary also encourages us to examine our current context and to look to the future in an effort to find avenues where we can more fully witness together to our common faith in Christ, to work toward Christian unity and work together for the world.Christians in Saskatoon and the surrounding areas are invited to study and dialogue about the Reformation using ‘Together in Christ’, a 5-session study series prepared by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB).The first session will be held Wednesday, September 20th at Zion Lutheran Church. The remaining four sessions will be offered twice a week: at a hosting church in the city during the week; and at Queen’s House Retreat and Renewal Centre on Saturday mornings from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm with an ecumenical panel of guest speakers. The 500th anniversary will also be marked with an ecumenical worship service to be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 29th, 2017 at the Cathedral of the Holy Family, 123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon, SK."We have come a long way. 500 years ago the Christian West exploded in multiple fragments through arguments and disagreements. We despised one another, we even killed one another. Then we ignored one another, developing our faith understandings and practices apart from one another. All in the name of Jesus, the embodiment of God’s love and mercy...Slowly we began to realize that Jesus’ command to love and extend mercy applied to other Christians. We began to recognize that Christ’s guiding presence resides in each of our traditions, each according to one’s particular charisms and perspectives. That was a monumental realization, made possible by the rich ecumenical encounters, dialogues and agreements of the past 50 years, all the way from the people in our pews to Popes, Patriarchs and global Archbishops. It’s time to mark this great turning point in ways that open up new avenues towards full visible Christian Unity for our common future in Christ. Join us for five sessions to learn about how far we have come and to celebrate this moment together."
